SEO for a New Website: What to Do in the First 90 Days

A realistic plan for the first three months of SEO on a new website, from technical setup to content and reviews.

SEO for a New Website: What to Do in the First 90 Days

In the first 90 days of a new website, set up the technical foundation, claim your search presence, publish content that answers real questions and start collecting genuine reviews. Expect gradual progress, and avoid shortcuts that cause penalties.

A new website starts with no history, so patience matters. The first three months are about building a clean foundation and a steady habit, not about chasing rankings.

Here is a realistic plan, week by week, that we adapt for clients. It assumes a small or mid-size business site and no large budget.

Weeks 1 to 2: the foundation

Before you create content, make sure search engines can find and understand what you already have.

  • Connect Google Search Console and analytics
  • Submit your sitemap
  • Check that the site is not blocked from search engines
  • Make sure every page has a unique title and description
  • Check mobile usability and speed
  • Confirm the site loads on one address only, with and without www redirecting properly

Weeks 3 to 4: your search presence

Local and brand signals take time to build, so start them early.

  • Set up or fix your Google Business Profile
  • Make business details consistent across directories and social pages
  • Add the main service pages you may have skipped
  • Write an honest About page naming the team
  • Add a clear contact page with a map and opening hours

Weeks 5 to 8: content with a purpose

Choose a small set of searches that bring real customers. Write a page or article for each, answering the question fully. Resist the urge to publish many thin pages.

  • Use the words your customers use, not industry jargon
  • Link new pages from your main pages
  • Add FAQs drawn from real customer questions
  • Include photos, examples and real details that only you could provide

Weeks 9 to 12: proof and reviews

By now the site should be indexed. Use this time to build proof.

  • Ask satisfied customers for reviews
  • Publish a case study
  • Check Search Console for pages that are indexed and pages that are not
  • Fix any errors reported
  • Look at which searches show impressions and improve those pages

What to expect

After three months you should have a clean, indexed site and a clear sense of which searches you can win. Strong rankings for competitive searches usually take longer, so judge progress by indexing, impressions and enquiries instead of position alone.

If nothing is indexed after a few weeks, check for accidental blocks and technical errors first. If you are indexed but not seen, you probably need better content or more proof of trust, and that takes time.

What not to do

Do not buy links, do not publish hundreds of near-duplicate pages and do not ignore the basics because they look boring. The boring basics are the part that works.

Key takeaways

  • Set up analytics, Search Console and a sitemap in week one
  • Claim your Google Business Profile and key listings
  • Publish content aimed at questions your customers ask
  • Do not buy links, fake reviews or copy content

Common questions

When will I see results?

Early signs often appear within weeks, but meaningful traffic usually takes months and depends on competition.

Do I need a blog?

Not necessarily. Helpful pages on your main topics matter more than posting for its own sake.

Can I do this myself?

Many basics are straightforward. We can handle the technical parts or guide you.
