How to Redesign Your Website Without Losing Google Rankings

A step-by-step approach to redesigning or migrating a website while protecting existing search traffic.

How to Redesign Your Website Without Losing Google Rankings

You can redesign a website without losing rankings by recording what ranks today, keeping the pages that perform, redirecting every changed address to its new equivalent, testing on a private copy and watching Search Console after launch. Most ranking losses come from skipped redirects.

Redesigns often go wrong in the same way: the new site looks better, but traffic drops because pages were moved, deleted or rewritten without a plan.

You can avoid this. Here is the process we follow, and the questions we ask before touching anything.

Step 1: Record what you have

Before changing anything, list your current pages and note which bring traffic and enquiries. Search Console and analytics will tell you. Save this list, because it is the benchmark you will compare against after launch.

  • Export the list of all addresses
  • Note which pages earn visits and leads
  • Note which pages are linked from other websites
  • Keep a copy of current titles, descriptions and headings

Step 2: Decide what to keep, merge or remove

Not every page deserves to survive. But decide deliberately, and keep the content that works. Pages that bring traffic should keep their key content, even if the design changes.

  • Keep and improve pages that perform
  • Merge weak, similar pages into one stronger page
  • Remove pages with no value, and redirect them to the nearest relevant page

Step 3: Map every old address to a new one

If an address changes, set a permanent redirect from the old to the closest new page. This passes visitors and most search value to the new address. Redirects are the single most important technical step in a migration.

  • Redirect to the closest relevant page, not always the home page
  • Check there are no chains of redirects
  • Update internal links to point to the new addresses directly
  • Test a sample of redirects on the staging site

Step 4: Build on a private staging site

Test the new site where search engines cannot see it. Check titles, headings, content, forms, speed and mobile layout. Compare it with your benchmark list to be sure nothing important was lost.

Step 5: Launch and watch

Switch over at a quiet time, remove any block that kept the staging site private, submit the new sitemap and monitor Search Console. Expect small fluctuations in the first weeks, and look for sudden drops on key pages. Fix errors quickly.

Keep the redirects in place for at least a year, and ideally permanently, because old links continue to exist for a long time.

If you are changing platform or domain

Changing platform, for example from an old CMS to WordPress or Shopify, uses the same steps, with extra care for data such as products and customers. Changing domain name needs the same redirect mapping plus a formal address change in Search Console. Both are manageable when planned, and risky when improvised.

Key takeaways

  • Record your current pages, traffic and rankings first
  • Keep or improve content that already performs
  • Redirect every changed address with a 301 redirect
  • Check Search Console for errors in the weeks after launch

Common questions

Is a small drop after a redesign normal?

Sometimes. Search engines re-evaluate changed sites, and a careful migration usually keeps this small.

Should I change my domain at the same time?

Avoid changing too many things at once. If a domain change is needed, plan redirects and use Search Console's change tools.

Can I redesign in stages?

Yes. Phasing the work can reduce risk, particularly for large sites.
